Located in the Caribbean Sea, the marvelous islet of St. John is part of the United States of America, or rather – owned by the United States Virgin Islands. St. John is both the smallest in the group and the richest. The constant number of inhabitants here does not exceed five thousand, while more than half live in the largest town – Cruz Bay. The island of St. John attracts travelers (and sometimes even stars of television screens and cinema) with its remoteness from civilization and the lack of amenities – a kind of savage vacation in the Caribbean.
Around the beginning of the third century AD, Arawaki arrived in St. John – by water, naturally – from present-day Colombia and Venezuela. More militant Caribs drove out peaceful Arawaks – this happened at the beginning of the fourteenth century. In fact, the Caribbean region includes 30 countries: some of them are on the brink of survival, others have a very high standard of living. In general, local prices cannot be called low. But, for example, a trip to the Bahamas or the Dominican Republic will cost more than to Jamaica, Cuba or Haiti. The Caribbean (Spanish Mar Caribe; English Caribbean Sea) – one of the most beautiful tropical seas, part of the Atlantic Ocean. The marginal semi-enclosed sea is bounded by Central and South America from the south and west, and by the Antilles from the east and north (thanks to which the sea has a second name – Antilles).
In the north-west, the sea through the Yucatan Strait (Spanish Yucatán Channel) communicates with the Gulf of Mexico; through many inter-island straits – with the Atlantic Ocean; and in the southwest, through the artificially constructed 80 kilometer waterway (Panama Canal) – with the waters of the Pacific Ocean.
